Recall of Councilmembers Maurice Goodman and Angelina Cahalan

Last year, San Mateo County Executive Officer Mike Callagy and the Board of Supervisors attempted to steamroll the repurposing of a fully operational and profitable hotel in Millbrae – the La Quinta Inn – into Permanent Supportive Housing for the homeless. It was a unilateral decision formalized and announced with absolutely no input from the City of Millbrae or its residents!

Despite concerns raised and repeated appeals, councilmembers Maurice Goodman and Angelina Cahalan persisted in supporting the project against the wishes of their constituents and failed to respond to their valid concerns. Furthermore, they also asked to have their names withdrawn from the letter and fact sheet sent by the City of Millbrae to the County regarding La Quinta (link). This divisive action helped to create the erroneous impression that a large number of residents were not opposed to the project – subsequently tipping the balance toward County approval in September.  City officials have since filed a lawsuit against the decision, and continue to fight for our community (link).

We view the actions taken by Goodman and Cahalan as a betrayal of the trust placed in them by their electorate – the Millbrae citizens they have sworn to serve. Rather than faithfully represent the views clearly espoused by most residents – more than 7200 of whom voices their objections to La Quinta via petition – they opted instead to disregard the will of their constituents.

Millbrae residents deserve and demand a more representative way of governance, one that is: accountable, respectful, fiscally responsible, trustworthy, and transparent.

We form the Recall Councilmembers Goodman & Cahalan committee to send a clear message to the Council: Millbrae Residents Will Not Tolerate Self-Serving Representation! To that end, we are gathering support for the recalls of both Vice Mayor Goodman and Councilmember Cahalan, whose conduct has been most egregious and will lead to a blight on our community from their misdirected actions.

We ask for your support in favor of more accountable leadership. Should we garner enough signatures, the city will schedule recall election for residents of District 2 and 4 to vote on the approval/disapproval of their respective councilmember.

Thank you for your time! We hope you and your neighbors will join in the quest for better leadership and governance. Please sign our recall petition and fill out the contact form below to stay updated and volunteer with us.
